Every great initiative needs a champion to ensure it comes to fruition and is successful and effectively leveraging data is no exception to this rule. In fact, McKinsey & Company has stated that companies that make extensive use of data analytics see as much as a 126% profit improvement over those that don’t. But how do executives get access to the necessary business intelligence tools to start utilizing data? Usually those efforts are led by someone else: a data champion.

What is the Role of a Data Champion?

So perhaps your organization has decided to do more with data. You may have even identified an individual to lead this charge. What role does this data champion play? First, this person will need to determine exactly what types of data your company already collects. As we have discussed in previous blogs, there may be several sources of data that already live within your company. Once you have identified what data you have, then you can figure out what data you actually USE and how data can inform decisions and influence your bottom line. The next step will be to figure out what data your company has but ISN’T using, and why. There could be a myriad of reasons that your company isn’t already utilizing data to the fullest extent (e.g., lack of access). It is the job of the data champion to unlock data for your organization, identify what data still need to be collected, and develop methods to collect needed information. Overall a data champion must have a handle on what data is available, how data is being used, and how the organization would like to use it in the future.

Data Champions Drive Data to Users

Data visualizations can tell very powerful stories and a data champion will play a key role in developing these essential visualizations. A champion will need to spend time with organizational users to identify what they want to see and how they want to see it. An effective champion will push users to ask deeper questions of the data to help develop additional metrics that may not be immediately obvious. A champion will also empower users to build their own visualizations by providing them direct access, allowing them to answer unique questions that may only be pertinent to them or their department or role. Getting data and visualizations in the hands of decision makers will be key to the success of any data analytics effort.

Overall, data champions play a crucial and pivotal role in uncovering the value that sits within each organization’s data and becoming a data champion is a great way to contribute to the success of your organization.
